May-June 2019 newsletter

It’s mid-year and we’ve been busy pressing on with numerous initiatives. Amanda announced that the Similarity Check service is changing and is managing the transition of member participants from Turnitin to us. The outreach team is keen to hear members’ updates on data citation readiness - urgent issue or back-burner item? We’re promoting a survey from Metadata 2020 about people’s level of knowledge about metadata. And we say goodbye to two colleagues for two very different reasons.

Have you transitioned your Similarity Check service yet?

Thanks to the 30% of you who have already clicked through to review and accept the new terms for Similarity Check. If you participate in this service as a member you will have had a unique link emailed to the main member account contact and should act on that before the end of August to ensure your access to iThenticate continues smoothly.

DataCite is seeking its next Executive Director

Our friends at DataCite are hiring a new Executive Director to lead them into a bright future. DataCite runs an important part of the scholarly infrastructure and we work very closely with them. We will be sad to say goodbye to Patricia Cruse as she retires but we look forward to working with her successor as DataCite grows from strength to strength.

License metadata for the win

Complete and accurate license metadata helps us understand how research works can be used. It is important this is stated clearly in the Crossref metadata or users will not know which content they can make available and which they cannot, even if the publisher knows that the item is open access, or is open access after a certain date. This can impact the research community’s capacity to find and use the research you publish.

We’ve collaborated with Jisc to communicate some guidelines for publishers on how to register this all-important license metadata with us.

Metadata 2020 Survey

This important community-led initiative is looking to better understand attitudes and usage of metadata across all walks of scholarly communications: from metadata creators, curators, and custodians, to metadata consumers. As well as taking the survey please share it on social media and within your own communities to ensure they get as broad a response as possible.

Submit your feedback here. Please and thank you :-)

Thank you and good luck to Jennifer Lin!

One of our own has decided to move onto pastures new in San Francisco and we wish her all the luck in the world. In 3½ years Jennifer contributed to the strategic direction of Crossref and built a product team in a new role. She oversaw the rollout of two key tools in beta recently: participation reports and metadata manager. And she also drove forward Event Data, and the distributed usage logging initiative, while adding peer review reports and preprints to our Content Registration service. All developments that have significantly enhanced Crossref’s support for its members. Good luck in your next endeavors, JLin!

The saddest goodbye of all.

We lost our wildly talented friend and colleague, Christine Hone, to cancer a few weeks ago. Our blog tribute says it all.

Rest in Peace, Christine ❤️
